East Toward Dawn

East Toward Dawn by Nan Watkins

I found this book in the stacks at work. I was looking for World War I materials, but someone had left this little gem on a shelf in the area. At first glance, I realized it needed to be sent to the travel and geography section, but I decided to take a peek inside first.

Nan Watkins writes about her trip around the world always moving east toward the rising sun. On her journey, she recalls memories and explores her feelings about the present as well. She is not the typical traveler, yet her discussion invites one into her adventure.

I have always wanted to travel to the far East, but now I feel as if I have already visited. Watkin's descriptions of people and place are telling enough to give a clear understanding to any reader. I smelled the bazaars, I heard the people, I felt the breezes as Watkins traveled from place to place. I saw the bright colors and shrines and was able to experience different countries along Watkins's journey as if I were traveling with her.

I am so glad this little travel story was misplaced by someone. Otherwise, I would have never been able to experience such a journey.
